Deceased Raptors

Help
Remember:
It is illegal to collect carcasses or any part thereof (meaning, don't take feathers, bands, or anything off a raptor carcass.)
Finding a dead raptor can be distressing, but it is important to keep a cool head. Here are a few general things to keep in mind:

  • Contact us immediately. A necropsy might be warranted and a fresh sample required.
  • Assess the area for hazards. Most importantly, note any hazards such as electric power poles with transformers, dead carcasses that may have attracted the raptor, possible toxins, etc. Move road-kills off-road to prevent additional vehicle strikes.
  • Check the legs for bands. Make careful notes of any bands, including colors, codes, and orientation.
  • Do not remove feathers or anything from the carcass unless specifically instructed to do so.
  • If it is nesting season, take a careful look for a nearby nest. There may be orphaned chicks nearby.
